When a Fire Watch May Be Required
- A sprinkler, fire alarm or other fire protection system is out of service.
- Hot work or construction activity creates added fire risk.
- The fire authority or your insurer directs a watch until conditions are corrected.
Who Decides
The authority having jurisdiction — usually your local fire department — determines whether a fire watch is needed, how it is conducted and when it can end. Contact the fire authority for your address and keep its instructions with the watch log.
What a Log Typically Records
- Site address, impaired system and the date and time the watch began.
- Each patrol round: time, areas checked and observations.
- Hazards found and the action taken, including who was notified.
- Officer name or initials and shift handover notes.
